The northeastern United States is a great place to visit any time of year, but during Fall, the cooler temperature and intense colour of the changing leaves makes Autumn (Americans say Fall) a special time to explore the region.

With a nice mix of urban and rural areas, a trip can be tailored to whatever pace the traveler is looking for.

1. Boston

The hub of New England is a big town with a small town feel.

Downtown Boston is like a living and breathing textbook of the birth of America. The Freedom Trail includes historic places like Paul Revere’s home next to the Old North Church.

The harbour area around Quincy Market is full of great bars and restaurants in a pedestrian friendly environment.

2. Cape Cod

Once the swarm of summer crowds leaves, Cape Cod becomes a relaxing place to spend some quality time in the fall. Once October rolls around, waiting for a table at a restaurant and getting stuck in traffic are a thing of the past.

Villages like Falmouth, Woods Hole and Chatham represent the best of what New England coastal towns are all about. Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard are also easily accessed by ferry.

3. The Finger Lakes

From the Big Apple to the Adirondacks to the Great Lakes, the Empire State has something for just about everyone. With all the attractions, the Finger Lakes region is sometimes overlooked.

For the traveler who enjoys wineries and breweries with some incredible small towns and unbelievable scenery, the Finger Lakes punches the ticket. The historic Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles is a great place to unwind.

4. Down East Maine

From the New Hampshire state line up to Portland, the southern coast of Maine is packed with great lobster, unique small towns and beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Highway One winds through quaint places like Kittery, Wells, Ogonquit and Kennebunkport. In Freeport, L.L. Bean’s headquarters is a campus of stores that never close their doors.

5. Newport, Rhode Island

Though a bit touristy, Newport offers a glimpse into the gilded age with its many mansions that line beautiful Bellevue Avenue. The cliff walk is a great way to check out the exteriors of the mansions and the beauty of Narragansett Bay at the same time.

Downtown has a nice mix of bars and restaurants alongside several upscale shops. In the middle of town, Trinity Church is a monument to religion and American history where George Washington and Queen Elizabeth II attended services.
